The Acute Chest Syndrome in Sickle Cell Disease: Incidence and Risk Factors
نویسندگان
چکیده
The acute chest syndrome (ACS), a pneumonia-like illness in sickle cell patients, is one of the most frequent causes of their morbidity and hospitalizations. Repeated ACS events may predict the development of chronic lung disease. ACS is reported as a frequent cause of death in these patients. We examine here the incidence and risk factors of ACS in 3,751 patients with sickle cell disease who were observed prospectively for at least 2 years (19,867 patient-years [ptyrsl) as part of a multicenter national study group. The ACS, defined by a new pulmonary infiltrate on x-ray, occurred at least once in 1,085 patients (2,100 events). ACS incidence was higher in patients with homozygous sickle cell disease (SS; 12.8/100 pt-yn) and in patients with sickle cell-fi’ thalassemia (9.4/100 pt-yrs), and lower in patients with hemoglobin (Hb) SC disease (5.2/100 pt-yrs) and patients with sickle cell-@+ thalassemia (3.9/100 pt-yrs). a-Thalassemia did not affect the rate of ACS incidence in SS patients. Within each Hb type the incidence was strongly but inversely re-

Pattern of chronic lung lesions in adults with sickle cell disease in Lagos, Nigeria
Background: The vascular response to recurrent tissue hypoxia and reperfusion following red blood cell sickling causes acute chest syndrome and chronic lung disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the pattern of chronic lung lesions and possible risk factors in sickle cell patients in lagos, Nigeria. Methods: From July 2012 to April 2013, Pulmonary function test (PFT) and chest-x-ray...

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a significant medical and public health problem in the world. It is believed that it can worsen in extreme conditions. Also, it is suggested that blood disorders such as sickle cell disease (SCD) may increase the risk of COVID-19 symptoms. The present study reports a family facing COVID-19, in which one of two members with SCD presented with fever, repeate...
متن کاملCerebrovascular accidents in sickle cell disease: rates and risk factors.
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is a major complication of sickle cell disease. The incidence and mortality of and risk factors for CVA in sickle cell disease patients in the United States have been reported only in small patient samples. The Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease collected clinical data on 4,082 sickle cell disease patients enrolled from 1978 to 1988. Patients were followed f...

متن کاملAsthma is a risk factor for acute chest syndrome and cerebral vascular accidents in children with sickle cell disease
BACKGROUND: Asthma and sickle cell disease are common conditions that both may result in pulmonary complications. We hypothesized that children with sickle cell disease with concomitant asthma have an increased incidence of vaso-occlusive crises that are complicated by episodes of acute chest syndrome. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective chart analysis was performed investigating 48 children ages 3...
